We need to provide nest boxes as well as feeders and birdbaths. Further encouraging garden birds into our gardens and keep them healthy and happy. This shortage of natural nesting sites for birds has played a part in the decline of some of the UK’s most iconic species.

It is now easier than ever to provide both functional and beautiful nesting opportunities for birds in our gardens and outdoor spaces. There is no best time to put up nest boxes. By putting up boxes in the autumn, you can provide much-needed winter refuges for roosting birds. It is possibly increasing the chance of them staying and nesting in the spring. Putting up in autumn is an excellent practice to maintain as a well-designed nest box will only need cleaning once per year. Also, waiting until autumn to clean them usually ensures they’re empty.

One of the key determinants in how likely birds are to occupy nest boxes is where you choose to locate them. Some will choose to roost alone, whereas others will favour sharing body heat and roost in groups. The one thing they all look for is somewhere to sleep that is secure, comfortable and will protect them from potential predators. Cosy roosting spaces out of the prevailing wind in your garden can be a lifesaver for small birds during harsh weather conditions. The Sari is the ‘bell-shaped’ model of our Artisan Wild Bird Nester range. Offering a medium-sized cavity wth a small-sized hole perfect for small garden bird species, such as Blue and Coal Tits, which roost alone or in a pair.
The Fair Trade Bird Nester has a sturdy inner frame for support. Attached strong metal hooks at the rear and a long loop at the top to ensure you can fasten the nester securely. As a result, these make it easier to site the nester in the natural leaf cover and vegetation of ivy, bushes, trees or hedges. The nester has a small round entrance reinforced with steel. It is also slightly protruding to make it easy for birds to land and perch on.
Purchasing our Fair Trade product helps both wildlife and people. In addition to giving a bird a nest, you’ll be supporting the Artisan workers in Southern Bangladesh who make them. Funding the survival of many women and their families from rural communities in desperate poverty.
Handmade to the highest quality finish using hogla grass and recycled saris.
(Hogla is a type of grass that abundantly grows in Bangladesh and is used as a material for baskets, cushions and placemats. Hogla grass regularly causes problems near the shores as it can overgrow whole harbors, rivers and ponds. This material is considered a weed and the local villagers remove it.)
Every nester is unique in colour! Each artisan chooses the colourful recycled sari pattern making every nester different.
Siting
Position the bird nester in a sheltered space to keep out harsh weather. Preferably face the bird nester between North and South-East. A warm, protected roosting space out of the prevailing wind can be a lifesaver for small birds during cold, harsh weather conditions.
